This figure dates to about the 1920s and exhibits superb craftsmanship. It is a transitional style which began to appear after late 19th century colonialism. The slightly stooped figure is standing on an a thick oval base containing 4 high relief-carved lizards (three of them are interlocking)! The male figure is holding a voluminous bowl with a snake in his left hand and a lizard in his right hand which are no doubt highly symbolic. The bowl has some white residue in it and may have been used for offerings. The figure is obviously the work of a very accomplished craftsman and is testimony to "old world" skill and artistry. It has acquired an excellent blackened patina turning to red from age and use.
