Philippine Moro Carved Shield, Filippino

Sold. (6 photos on file)

Description

This shield is carved from a large single piece of wood. It is very difficult to find examples of this vintage now! Its carved face is decorated with radiating triangles and scallop motifs. Its central boss and two outer circles are accented with old red pigment paint. The raised structure of the "pass through" handle is secure and intact. The bent pieces of bamboo are secured with wooden pegs on the back side (some pegs are missing). It shows moderate to heavy use and does, of course, have various, scuffs, dings and small chips especially around the edges associated with combat use. There is museum quality restoration to a 3 inch wedge shaped area on one side. It is sure to be a welcome addition to any collection of tribal art, Arms and Armor, or Philippine Moro Weapons.

Origin: Southern Philippines, "Moroland" Moro People
Period: At least early 20th century, likely 19th century
Materials: Wood, bamboo, red pigment paint
