This shield is carved from a single massive piece of wood. The age and ethnographic use on this example is significant and suggests an early date, possibly first quarter of the 19th century. The painted decoration is very old and subtle, the design being somewhat faint from exposure. Its paint would have been added sometime after its leather covering fell off. There are two old fragmented labels ( see photos ). It has a chip off the edge on the back side as well as other old chips and losses, but both handles are intact. At one time it would have had a split piece of rattan stretched around the back rim. There is also some old worm or borer holes in the wood as might be expected on an old piece. Sure to be a very welcome addition any collection of Arms and Armor, or Philippine Moro Weapons.
