Eastern Bontoc Wooden Bag

"Koppit / Kupit"

 

This elegant lidded box bag locally known as "Koppit/Kupit" was used for carrying rice and other food to the fields for lunch as well as container for personal supplies. It has been repaired while on the owners possession but it is still in lovely condition. Its a very rare piece, hard to acquire Philippine tribal art, With a bird eating snake relief which indicates that the owner is a great hunter among its people.

The basketry version of this form is common among both Bontoc and Ifugao, but wooden examples like these are rarer.

 

Dimensions:  Height 6.25" (15.9 cm),  Width 10.25"  (26 cm),  Height Rattan Sling 20"  (51 cm)

Origin:   Eastern Bontoc tribe, Barlig Mt. Province, Northern Luzon Philippines.

Period: Early 20th Century, Acquired by a collector on the late 90's
